Advocating for Better Support for Neurodivergent Young People

We were delighted that our Head of Service was recently invited to meet with the Rt Hon Alan Milburn in Sheffield to discuss the challenges facing young people and the importance of providing the right support to help them succeed.

Alan Milburn, former Health Secretary and Chair of the Social Mobility Commission, was commissioned by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to lead an independent review into the growing number of young people who are not in education, employment or training. His interim Young People and Work report examines the experiences of young disabled people and those with health conditions, as well as the barriers that can prevent them from participating in education and employment.

The meeting provided an important opportunity for our Head of Service to highlight the experiences of young neurodivergent people and the value of personalised, specialist support. The discussion explored how early intervention, ongoing advocacy and consistent guidance can help young people build confidence, recognise their strengths and move towards sustainable education, training and employment.

For many neurodivergent young people, securing an opportunity is only the beginning. Continued support can be essential in helping them navigate change, overcome barriers, communicate their needs and thrive in the longer term.

Our Head of Service also emphasised the importance of listening to young people and ensuring their voices and lived experiences help shape the services, policies and opportunities available to them. Meaningful inclusion requires more than short-term interventions. It depends on services, education providers, employers and decision-makers working together to provide support that is flexible, accessible and sustained.

We were proud to contribute to this important national conversation and to champion the needs and aspirations of neurodivergent young people. We will continue to advocate for greater understanding, inclusive opportunities and the ongoing specialist support that enables every young person to fulfil their potential.
