Charlie’s story

“Talking to people keeps me alive. I never thought I could achieve something so big”

Success in Hospitality

After leaving Leeds City College in 2022 with qualifications in both travel and hospitality, Charlie’s dream job was to be either a receptionist/concierge in a hotel, or to work in travel and tourism.

He had already done some part time work  and work experience in these fields but not manged to gain that full time, permanent role that he so wanted.

He joined the Local Supported Employment programme with Autism Plus in February 2025, where we worked with Charlie to enhance his CV and worked on his interview skills with his key worker.

By April he had built enough confidence to apply, and secure interviews for, several jobs in the hospitality sector. After only his second interview he was offered a post with the prestigious Hilton Hotels chain, and started work on the main reception desk at their Leeds City, Neville Street hotel two weeks later.

Two months into his new job and Charlie is thriving, he has the support of his manager and the LSE team and has just received a wonderful customer review, praising him for his customer service.

“Since joining our team, Charles Austin has made an incredible impact on both colleagues and guests. Their warmth and genuine care shine through in every interaction, creating memorable experiences for everyone they meet. In such a short time, they have already become an invaluable part of our team, thriving and bringing positivity to our workplace every day. This reinforces our ESG commitments and business priorities of supporting our people to reach their full potential in our local community”.

Here Charlie tells us his story in his own words:

“Everything I have ever done in my life has led to this moment. I never believed in myself. Getting picked out of 50 people during an interview was the biggest change in my life.

From the first week, I was terrified of being in a workplace

However, after being motivated and influenced by my managers, getting on with all my colleagues, not being judged for who I am, made me more confident to be myself at work. I have three amazing managers who helped me overcome difficult challenges. Jelena, Rashid and Charmaine.

I’d also like to thank Janet, one of my colleagues for organising a mental well-being walk and inviting me along. It was a real ice breaker and a good way to get me to mix with my colleagues for the first time. She also deserves credit for promoting my sky dive for Parkinson’s Disease in July”.

In work support is really important for our clients, it ensures they feel more secure and less anxious about their roles, and that they know they have someone they can turn to for advice and reassurance should they need to.

“Within one month, I have received 2  positive reviews from guests which is already a huge achievement.

I feel happier on busy days when events are happening. Socialising and interacting with people is what makes this job so amazing!

I also want to thank Autism Plus and my Key Worker so much for helping me through these tough few months in finding the perfect job”
